The Global Print Production Workflow Software Market

Introduction

The print industry is undergoing a major transformation. These changes represent opportunities for software and solution vendors. In 2004, InfoTrends released a first-ever comprehensive study of the print production-related software market entitled, The Global Print Production Workflow Market: Enabling Fundamental Business Change in Graphic Arts. The study sized the market for software and related services by product category and forecasted the growth of the market over the next five years.

Due to the rising importance of this market, InfoTrends has decided to turn that study into two annual market forecasts entitled, Global & North American Print Production Workflow Software Market Forecast and Global & Western European Print Production Workflow Software Market Forecast. Each outlook covers the period between 2004 and 2009.

Global Outlook & Overview

InfoTrends expects the global production software market to demonstrate a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 9.9%, moving from $6.2 billion in 2004 to $10 billion in 2009. At the same time, we believe that this 9.9% CAGR does not tell the whole story about a market that has a combination of mature categories that depress overall growth and other segments with strong growth.

Growth Rates (CAGR 2004-2009)

We expect to see those segments that contribute to service provider super-efficiency or value-added services to grow the most quickly. In addition, new categories like hybrid offset-digital workflow are projected to grow extremely fast, albeit from a very small base.

North America represented the largest geographical market for print production workflow software in 2004, accounting for almost half (46%, $2.8 billion) of all revenues. Western Europe accounted for over one-third of revenues (34%, $2.1 billion). Japan was the next largest market, although it represented only 10% of the market with a value of just over $0.6 billion.

As one might expect, over two-thirds of the in-scope market (68%, $4.2 billion) is made up of commercial and transaction printers. This segment includes quick printers, digital print specialists, prepress service bureaus, data center service bureaus, and in-plant facilities. The creative market, which includes graphic design and advertising firms, accounts for 11% of the total in-scope market, while the publishing market also represents 11%.
