Corporate Print Services: The In-Plant Printing Opportunity

Corporate Print Services: The In-Plant Printing Opportunity

Employees often view a trip to the copy center as a way to take a quick break. At the same time, however, there is significant opportunity to improve effectiveness and productivity by making it easier for employees to submit work online.

Recent research conducted by CAP Ventures indicates a widespread agreement to the statement, “PDF-based workflow will gain importance to me and my clients.” In fact, 58.4% of survey respondents have already invested in PDF-based workflow. Electronic submission of files is clearly gaining popularity.

Electronic File Submission Gaining Momentum

The mean amount of work received electronically in the in-plant environment is 51.5%. This is higher then most “quick printers,” who recently indicated that 41% of jobs were received electronically. Part of this dichotomy may relate to the convenience of delivering work for reproduction to an on-site facility.

Financial services/banking/insurance (69.1%) and companies with more than 10,000 total employees (65%) experienced more electronic job submission.

While PDF has become the preferred method of the print-for-pay world, it is significantly less pervasive in the in-plant world, although it is much higher than what quick printers report at 14%.

This is likely due to the expense of supplying the large number of people who submit work to the in-plant with PDF creation software, and the problems with training less skilled users, versus a more limited number of users with perhaps higher skills that would use an outside service in this way. Nevertheless, there are a number of tools and services on the market today that can alleviate these problems, and in-plants should stay abreast of these developments and consider adopting these tools as appropriate.
