Wide Format Solvent-Based Inkjet Printer and Supplies Market Overview and Outlook

Introduction

InfoTrends/CAP Ventures’ new forecast entitled Wide Format Solvent-Based Inkjet Printer and Supplies Market Forecast: 2004-2009 provides detailed coverage of wide format solvent-based inkjet printing systems on a worldwide basis between 2004 and 2009. It includes product segmentation, annual shipments, installed base, average selling prices, and system revenues (hardware, ink, media, and services) for this important technology.

Worldwide Market Overview

According to the forecast, worldwide projections for wide format solvent-based inkjet printers show that some segments of the market are in decline in revenue terms, due to increased competition from Asian suppliers and from UV-curable inkjet printers. New data projects total worldwide hardware revenues for this market to peak at $1.09 billion in 2007.

The two primary reasons for the hardware revenue peak in 2007 are the lower per-unit prices, and a purchasing shift from high-end wide format solvent-based inkjet printers to UV-curable inkjet technology that is environmentally safer and offers rigid substrate and roll-to-roll printing capability, as well as comparable outdoor durability.

Where is the Market Headed?

To combat the UV-curable trend, wider mid-range solvent systems that are very productive and less expensive are being introduced. These mid-range devices can be viewed as alternatives to the high-end systems, and they require half the investment and half the space of high-end systems.

The low-end eco-solvent market is also showing promise. Their low prices and integrated cutting systems
has propelled the low-end market to become one of the fastest growing segments of the wide format printing market.

Over the forecast period we expect to see continued strong growth in mid-range and low-end solvent-based inkjet printing systems, despite intense competition for the revenue streams for ink and media products, and pressure from alternative printing technologies, especially UV-curable inkjet.
