Book Production Represents Growth Opportunities for On-Demand Digital Print Services

(NorwellMA) October 1, 2002... The book production industry continues to represent an important and growing opportunity for the sale of digital print and on-demand print services, according to a new white paper by CAP Ventures.

Many publishers have started using on-demand printing processes for first print runs, and in some cases subsequent print runs, on books with uncertain demand. On-demand printing reduces the inventory risk associated with these titles, and for many publishers, it conserves scarce working capital. CAP Ventures believes that this trend will accelerate as more and more publishers become aware of the economic benefits of on-demand book production.

CAP Ventures' white paper defines the market for short-run and on-demand book printing using digital technologies. It identifies opportunities for short-run and on-demand book printing strategies throughout the life of a book. It also highlights the five types of publishing that are the best fits for on-demand digital printing and discusses the opportunities, strategies, and practices to successfully sell services to the book production market. The publishing jobs that are best suited for on-demand digital printing are:

  • Database custom publishing
  • Keep-in-print programs
  • Short-run publishing
  • Course packs
  • Prepublication copies

Publishers are creating or turning to content libraries for the purpose of easily reusing content to create derivative works and output their content in various formats, such as on-demand digital print, offset print, e-book, hand-held devices, and the Internet. In addition to digital print, on-demand printers can support publishers with a full range of value-added services, including scanning and file conversion, file management and storage, component cover printing, binding and finishing, as well as kitting and fulfillment.

According to Jim Hamilton, Associate Director for CAP Ventures' On Demand Printing & Publishing Consulting Service, "The book publishing industry is evolving due to industry consolidation, the growth of the Internet, and the impact of e-book and on-demand book technologies. New business models and workflows are emerging that address distribution channels and warehousing practices in innovative ways. This white paper provides valuable insight for book printers and book publishers as they rethink their overall market strategies to adapt to these trends."

CAP Ventures' white paper is entitled Revisiting On-Demand Book Production: Opportunities, Strategies, and Practices and is intended to provide the reader with an overview of the diverse publishing market. It identifies the industry segments and publications that are most likely to require digital print services, provides techniques for prospect identification, and outlines strategies for marketing and selling digital and on demand print services to publishing clients. Important topics include:

  • Applications for short-run and on-demand digital printing
  • Selling short-run and on-demand book services to book publishing print buyers
  • The value proposition for book publishers
  • Case histories about successful short-run and print-on-demand solutions at several stages of the book publishing value chain and various book publishing sectors, including an educational publisher, a book printer, a wholesale book distributor, and an independent trade publisher
